DAY SCHOOL
Christiania friAkademi can offer students:
- 3-7 year complete art education
- 1 year preparatory education for architecture, art or design studies
- Evening courses in drawing and painting
The curriculum is based on classical principles of composition. Traditional techniques used by the great masters in art are taught, along with more recent insights from art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Chistiania friAkademi wishes to pass on traditional artistic craftsmanship and skills to new generations, in order to raise the standard of today’s art. We work in completely figurative, semi-figurative, and abstract expressions in drawing and painting.
Chistiania friAkademi is located in the historic and cultural center of Oslo, which was previously named Christiania. This area is known for its old buildings, many from the 17th century, such as the Akershus fortress with its massive stone walls and arches, green lawns, a pond, and the view over the city of Oslo. Here are stables with horses and sailing ships in the harbor. Wander about, find inspiration in the scenery! In old Christiania there are many art museums and galleries, such as the Association of drawing and illustration, the National Association of Painters, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Association of Norwegian Printmakers, Grafill (the Norwegian Association for Visual Communication), the Museum of Architecture, the House of Photography, and many cafés and restaurants!

Artwork by first year students
The following are examples of artwork created by first year students, where perspective, proportions, light and shade, use of materials, constructive naturalism, still life, and portraits are some of the subjects studied. Christiania friAkademi has a unique curricular methodology, which gives tangible results within a short timeframe. This is not (primarily) about talent, but about targeted hard work that gives results. Student exercises enhance the creative results through improved rendering of volume, space, rhythm and dynamics.

We have developed an academic approach which allows rapid advancement, whether in drawing or painting, figurative, semi-figurative, or abstract. We encourage an empathic, caring environment, where students are supportive of one another in their individual learning processes. We give knowledge based guidance to students, because we know that they come to us to learn the skills they need to become well qualified professionals. It is our responsibility to enable you to reach that goal, and we will deliver results, as long as you are willing to put in the work!
Welcome!

Evening courses
Drawing
Step 1
The course gives a basic introduction to graphic structures, textures, and use of perspective. We learn about shape, volume, light and shade, in order to create a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface. This basic course is intended for students who wish to apply for schools in art, architecture, or advertising, but it is also for the students who simply wish to improve their artistic skills as a hobby.

Step 1
In this course we will work with nude models, and students will be introduced to the basic rules for plastic anatomic modeling of the human body, and use of light and shade. Students will start by drawing the main shapes of the body and getting the proportions right. Croquis drawings (rapid sketches) will be done using pencil or charcoal.

Theo Strømsted Persen |
This is the only academic course in Norway where the classical principles are taught. We will work with nude models, and the skills from step 1 will be developed further. The emphasis is on developing an understanding of the function and anatomy of the human body, its construction and dynamic rhythm. You will develop an improved understanding and ability to render volume, shape, and rhythmic sequences. You will learn to interpret opposing weight shifts and the model’s balance and position in space. We will work with pencil and paper, or in large formats with charcoal, chalk or red chalk. Croquis drawing (rapid sketches) in pencil and charcoal.

We will work with nude models. The student starts by choosing the model’s size and position in the painting. You will learn the importance of composition as a starting point from which the subject matter is developed. First the mass and volume of the main shapes are sketched and shaped, using light and shade, and cold and warm colours. The proportions and anatomy of the figure are put into place. The student will learn to render skin and hair as structural contrasts and textures, by “engraving” and variations in the use of different paintbrushes. The student should preferably have some experience with drawing from life, and basic painting skills.

Icon painting is an old art form which currently enjoys wide appeal. In this course we will work meticulously so that students have time to immerse themselves in the techniques and come into contact with the materials we use. You will learn how to construct and paint icons from scratch. We will use ancient techniques for icon painting, such as egg tempera and gold leaf on wood. All materials are included in the fee, and will be provided. The course is for everyone who wishes to paint icons, or who needs an introduction to the techniques. No prerequisites.
Light and shade
The light and shade course is for beginners and slightly experienced students. Students will be followed up individually, based on their skill levels. Students will learn the basic principles for how to construct a three-dimensional shape by using light and shade. There is one practical part of the course, which involves practicing how to achieve even values in a drawing. There is also a theoretical part of the course, where students will gain a better understanding of properties and function of light, and how this can be used to improve drawings. By working with basic shapes, students will get the practice and theoretical knowledge needed to render light and shade with highlights, reflected light, core shadows, and cast shadows on any object.
